Where to Stay: Lake Placid Lodge
In the heart of the Adirondacks, there’s a retreat hand-built in the Arts and Crafts tradition but with a modern spin. Originally built in 1882 as a private camp, the lodge first became a hotel in 1946. After a massive fire in 2005, a team of architects and scores of local artisans rebuilt the lodge that stands today, a tribute to the Adirondack Great Camps of the Gilded Age millionaires.
STAY: Luxe Cabin Life
The word “cabin” doesn’t do justice to the small abodes on the shore of the lake. Individually designed so that no two are alike, they’re private, warm, and comfortable – as well as being a visual feast. In the Main Lodge, Lakeside Building, Cabins, and Overlook Rooms, stone fireplaces offer guests the chance to cozy up beside a roaring fire, while deep soaking tubs beckon from the bathrooms. This is a place to get away from it all, helped by the fact that there’s only one TV on property.
EAT: Elevated Farm-To-Table Dining
Fresh, seasonal cuisine is the hallmark of Executive Chef Mark Hannon’s Artisans restaurant, one of the most celebrated restaurants in Lake Placid. The natural diversity of ingredients culled from the Adirondacks dictates the daily changing four course meal. For more casual fare, head to Maggie’s Pub, the lodge’s classic wood-paneled pub. For a private dinner you won’t soon forget, book the Lodge’s Wine Cellar, where you’ll dine in a room of vaulted brick, climbing vines, and rare vintages that gleam from their lit alcoves.
PLAY: A Playground for Both Summer and Winter
There’s no off-season at Lake Placid Lodge. In the winter, there’s ice-skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, while in the summer, you can go hiking, biking and boating. However, it’s important to note that napping is a time-honored Adirondack tradition, so be sure to allot ample time for that.
SAVE TIME FOR
Lake Placid was the location for the 1980 Winter Olympics, and a visit to the area wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Olympic Center and Museum, which is where “The Miracle on Ice” occurred – the US Hockey Team won the gold medal over the Soviet Union in 1980. Take a spin around the ice, and feel the glory. The more adventurous can even try their hand at bobsledding – under the guidance of a trained driver.
