Delray Beach: What to Do on the Water

What happens on dry land is just the start of activity in Delray Beach. Here’s our guide to the best water-oriented things to do in Delray Beach.

Gone Fishing

Boynton Harbor Marina is a hub for boat rentals and fishing charters. What can you expect to catch once you get out of the harbor? It’s not uncommon to reel in cobia, king mackerel, wahoo, snapper, even the same mahi mahi and grouper caught fresh locally for your dinner Latitudes, so head out on the water prepared to work for your prize.

A Yacht Fit for Thurston Howell III

If you’d prefer to sail the seas relaxing rather than working, a drink in hand rather than a fishing pole, Delray Yacht Cruises has you covered. With attentive staff who’ll keep your cocktail topped off so that you can focus on the luxe Delray Beach mansions that you’ll pass on the two-hour narrated tour, you’ll get a rich taste of the yachting life.

Watersports Galore

When you’ve tired of relaxing on the beach, caught your fill of fish, and cruised around to your heart’s content, you still haven’t come close to exhausting the list of things to do in Delray Beach, especially when it comes to watersports. There’s paddle-boarding, sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking. Delray Beach Watersports has all the equipment and expertise you’ll need to try your hand and master each.

Scuba Diving

Now that you’ve done all you can above the water line, it’s time to go below it. Blue Heron Bridge, located between Riviera Beach and Palm Beach Shores just north of West Palm Beach, was awarded “2013 Best Dive Site in the World” by PADI’s Sports Diver Magazine. With three sunken shipwrecks, bridge pilings, shark statues, and more, there’s plenty to see. With an easy water entry from the beach, the area is a prime diving spot for enthusiasts. Plan to dive 30 minutes prior to and after slack high tide. As for ocean creatures, you might see seahorses, octopi, French grunts, spotted eels, yellow rays, starfish, or maybe even eagle rays, sea turtles, or manatees. Hook up with Scuba Center, and see if you can spot an Atlantic Long Arm Octopus beneath the waves.

Waves Surf Academy

From paddle-boarding to surfing to boogie-boarding and more, Waves Surf Academy, or WSA, has fun on the water down to a science. Whether you’ve never been on a board before (but have always secretly harbored the desire to learn) or if you just want to improve your skills, WSA has lessons and camps for every activity and proficiency level. Friendly instructors, perfect waves, and white sand beaches – it’s all waiting for you out on the water in Delray Beach.
